General: Rambur's Forktail (Ischnura ramburii) are small damselflies. Males are green overall with blue on the end of the tail (abdominal segments 8 and 9). Females are orange-red, olive green, or may look like males.
These active creatures are harmless to humans, but they are voracious predators of small flying insects such as flies and mosquitoes. There are some good places for Watching Damselflies Around Las Vegas.
Taxonomy: Order Odonata, Suborder Zygoptera, Family Coenagrionidae.
Where to Find: Rambur's Forktail occur throughout all of North and South America, plus the Caribbean region and Hawaii. Around Las Vegas, Rambur's Forktail are uncommon around bodies of water such as springs at Red Rock Canyon and Lake Mead, and ponds such as those at Sunset Park and the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve. |
