General: Convergent Lady Beetles (Hippodamia convergens), also known as Lady Beetles, Ladybugs, and Ladybird Beetles, are small, roundish, red-orange beetles with a black head and black spots on the wing covers. Convergent Lady Beetles have white, diagonal stripes on the head.
This species has the odd habit of migrating to higher elevations during the fall and congregating in huge masses at the base of shrubs, under logs, under rocks, or other sheltered places. When the snows come, the mass of beetles spends the winter huddled together safely under the snow. |
