Longfin Dace (Agosia chrysogaster)

General Description: Longfin Dace (Agosia chrysogaster) grow to about 4-inches long. The fish are silvery overall with a black stripe on the side and the black dot at the base of the tail. However, on closer examination, the dorsal surface is grayish, and the sides are yellowish. The snout is rounded, the mouth is subterminal, and there is a barbel at the corner of the mouth.

Taxonomy: Minnow and Carp Family (Cyprinidae); formerly Rhinichthys chrysogaster.

Longfin Dace (Agosia chrysogaster)

Diet: Omnivorous. Feeds on invertebrates, detritus, and algae in the water column and on the bottom.

Preferred Habitat: Shallow desert and upland streams with flowing pools and a sandy, gravelly, or rocky bottom in tributaries to the Colorado River of Arizona and New Mexico (primarily the Gila and Bill Williams river systems), and Pacific drainages of western Mexico. Also found in the Hassayampa River.

Where to Find: Don't look for Longfin Dace around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them in streams in central and southern Arizona or down in Mexico.
