General Description: Pileated Woodpeckers (Dryocopus pileatus) are very large, black woodpeckers with a red cap and bold white stripes on the face. Males also have a red mustache line. The peaked red cap is distinctive.
Favored Habitat: Coniferous forests. |

Where to Find: Don't look for Pileated Woodpeckers around Las Vegas; rather, look for them in the high Sierra Nevada Mountains of California or around Lake Tahoe (or go to Canada or forested areas east of the Great Plains).
